History of Buck Hill Falls, PA

The Poconos Mountains community of Buck Hill Falls is a privately owned resort community in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The village and resort began in 1901 as a Quaker retreat by a group of Friends ( a religious order) from Philadelphia, including Charles F. Jenkins who was the president of the Buck Hill Falls Company until 1951. They established an exclusive stone lodge known as The Inn at Buck Hill Falls, which was popular until the late 1980s at which point it was owned and run by a local family without enough capitalization to maintain the property . By this time the Inn had 400 guest rooms and additional amenities, which included an indoor swimming pool with a retractable glass roof, large ornate lobby and common garden spaces and a restaurant.

A feature of the Inn at Buck Hill was a veranda which was a large covered stone porch with panoramic views of the unsettled Pocono mountains. The Inn closed in October 1990 but the community of Buck Hill Falls thrived as a place for city dwellers to retreat from the heat of the city and for winter getaways.

There exists, today, an active community of both summer and year-round residents, some of whom still come for a summer retreat from New York City or Philadelphia. The community of Buck Hill Falls is professionally managed and has amenities including a 27-hole Donald Ross-designed golf course, 10 tennis courts, hiking trails around one of the classic Poconos Mountains Waterfalls and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The quaint, adjacent villages of Mountainhome and Canadensis have food stores, some of the best Poconos Restaurants, pubs, antique shops, art galleries and tourist attractions. The community's location near Camelback Skiing, Mt Airy Casino, Lake Wallenpaupack and other Poconos Activities keep visitors and homeowner's and their families occupied with fun things to do year around.

The actual Buck Hill Water Falls is known for its natural beauty and although private, for the homeowners and Buck Hill Falls club memeber, is a memorable visit.
